On Being Lost In Thought
We are Lost in Thought.
Thinking is in most cases a masturbatory exercise; not to condemn all mental activity, but the kind of thinking along the lines of "I'm mulling over this, I'm worried about that" vs. the spark of insight, the flight of imagination, the immediate articulation of things. As soon as it descends into worry and semantic games, it's just self abuse.
Philosophy in this form is homosexual. It is petty, gay, introspective, vain, deluded about its comprehensiveness, masking great evil with long spiraling defenses of itself. It is walking by sight and not by faith, walking by one's own understanding. It can't let itself be stupid.
In contrast, the prophetic mode. Still mental, yes, still logocentric. It is the poetry of world conquest. It is concerned with the spirit and repentance. It does not claim to be exhaustive. It is agonistic, electric, and fertile. And hopefully one keeps one's mouth shut most of the time.
Of course, associative thinking is dangerous if unchecked and most be constantly critiqued, relentlessly tested for falsehood, hence the agonism. But it allows itself to be stupid. It exposes itself to immediate criticisms, it's grand enough to take them, as opposed to philosophy, the mode of the academy, which cloaks itself in so many long complicated dissemblings, not so much to reach truth as to make one professionally unassailable.
The problem is that many truly intelligent people gravitate to the philosophic mode and they roost on many treasures that they are unwilling to set free, lest they be misused by the grubby uninitiate masses, with their vulgarity and pugilism. One more reason the academy must be destroyed, to set the incentives of these literati free, free, free.
I support sophistication - civilization - culture - refinement - as long as it is no threat to fertility. The good of the tribe must come first, akshually.
Maximus the Confessor argued that Jesus never deliberates.
Sadly I must struggle with this deeply habituated deliberation in my every day - in working, in creativity, in my relationships. It's nearly fatal. Maybe at age 11 someone could have saved me from this by airdropping me into the Alaskan wilderness and having me train karate with the bears for five years.
You have to be willing to get stupid.
The traditional form of this is drinking alcohol, but Christians will have to find some other way.
Empire requires philosophy — and moral philosophy, social ethics — to maintain itself (just as it requires cabals of gay mandarins) but tribe requires prophecy (cunning, fruitfulness, bravery, sacrifice, miracles) in order to maintain heterosexuality within the cultural sphere — thoughtglut either maintains civilization or ironically tangles one in disillusionment by perpetually undressing and prodding civilization’s infinitely questionable flaws, the flaws of the nomos. Either through cultivating devotion or through tasteful cynicism it neutralizes resistance against an evil culture either way.
